Craft Beer Spotlight: State Line Liquors

If you currently reside in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania and you haven’t heard of State Line Liquors, pack your bags because you’re in for a serious treat. State Line Liquors lies in the north-east corner of Maryland right off interstate 95 where Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware all come together. Hence the name “State Line”. Known as one of the best liquor stores in the WORLD, this place is a true mecca in every sense of the word.

Celebrating over 80 years in business. This family-owned establishment has been operating since 1935, that’s four generations of family! If you have ever been here, you would know that the Murray family truly does take pride in their store. The service and quality of products are unparalleled, along with a selection that will make you realize why liquor stores have shopping carts. As soon as you walk through the door you’re greeted with a friendly smile and hello, most likely from Co-owner/beer guru Robert Murray. Rob started working at the family business during high school when the store had only one cold case for imports and one door for crafts. “I loved beer and I needed my place in the store, a niche, so I told my family that craft is where the customers are headed.” Boy, was he right. Now, this 17,000-square-foot paradise carries over 3,000 different beers, has a 35-line draft system, and was recently recognized as the #3 bottle shop in the U.S. by RateBeer.com.

It’s weird thinking about a liquor store being voted as one of the best places to have a beer in the world, but only because you’ve probably never been there. One of my favorite things about the store is that you can take one of whichever product you want. There is nothing worse than buying a six pack of craft beer and not liking it. Leaving you to pawn those other 5 beers off on your friends. At State Line, you can take as many different beers home with you as you want. This is great for people who love to try a bunch of different things. Every time I come here I end up leaving with at least 18 different beers and it’s all limited beers I’ve never had before. State Line not only has a great selection, but their daily events really bring in a crowd. When they do a tap takeover they usually put 5-10 different beers on tap, though I’ve seen 15-35 different beers featured at once too. They offer amazing specials on cans, and customers only pay $5 for a free pint glass from the brewery and unlimited tastings. They also offer special 64oz. growler fills for only five bucks!

People from all over the world travel to State Line to stock up on their favorite products and that’s no exaggeration. When NCBC had a tap takeover back in July there was an insane turnout of over 60 people. When talking to all the customers, we met people from not only the surrounding states but people who were on vacation from Florida and California as well. They said when they come to Maryland on vacation every year, State Line is one of their favorite stops. This place is not your ordinary quick liquor store stop, it’s heaven with a deli.
