Craft Beer Spotlight: Local Whiskey
College towns are well known for having a concentration of raucous dive bars, and clubs packed with undergrads, loud music, and the best well liquor and domestic beer specials in town. Always a great time if you’re in the right frame of mind, but that scene isn’t for everyone… If you’re one of those individuals, Local Whiskey in State College is the pub to escape the fray.
Local Whiskey opened its doors in December of 2012. Michael Fullington and partners set out to create a relaxed, upscale bar that caters to whiskey and craft beer lovers alike. ‘Local’ as patrons affectionately call it, boasts over 350 different varieties of Irish Whiskey, Scotch, Bourbon, and other unique variations to satisfy any whiskey craving. Craft cocktails your thing? Look no further! Local specializes in classic, and specialty cocktails often incorporating unique spirits, fresh juices, local produce, and house-made bitters and syrups.
Local Whiskey certainly has one of the largest whiskey selections in Central Pennsylvania, but us beer fiends are never forgotten. General manager Tim Riefel always has the beer lover’s best interests in mind when it comes to pub experience. Whether that be constant rotation within Local’s 12 draft lines, regularly updating their expansive bottled beer list, or the frequent new beer releases and tasting events, craft beer is still very much in the mix.
All of that bourbon, whiskey, scotch, and beer is bound to make any soul crave for some delicious pub fare. With a kitchen open and serving right up until 2 am, you have your choice of prime apps, sandwiches, entrees, or State College staple Ernie’s Famous Cheese Steaks.
Things you will often find at Local Whiskey: a Neshaminy Creek beer on tap amidst other great craft brands, your favorite Islay scotches, and fantastic pub food. Things you won’t: 21st birthdays, and bar tours.
The next time you need your bourbon neat, or a pint of your favorite IPA, head to Local Whiskey to wind out your day.
